NDIS Plan Management Explained

Not sure what plan management means for your NDIS funding? We break down the three management types and help you understand which option gives you the most flexibility.

If you've just received your first NDIS plan — or you're heading into a plan review — one of the most important decisions you'll make is how your funding is managed. It's a topic that confuses a lot of participants, and it's worth taking the time to understand your options before your planning meeting.

The Three Types of NDIS Plan Management

The NDIS offers three ways to manage your funding: agency-managed, plan-managed, and self-managed. Each works differently, and the right choice depends on your goals, capacity, and the types of supports you want to access.

Agency-Managed (NDIA-Managed)

With agency-managed funding, the NDIA pays your providers directly from your plan. You can only use NDIS-registered providers, which limits your choice somewhat — but it also means less administrative work for you.

This option is common for participants who are new to the NDIS or who prefer a hands-off approach to the financial side of their plan.

Plan-Managed

Plan management sits in the middle ground. A registered plan manager handles the financial administration on your behalf — they pay your invoices, track your budget, and provide you with regular spending statements. The key advantage is that you can use both registered and unregistered providers, giving you significantly more choice.

Plan management funding is separate from your other supports, so it doesn't eat into your core or capacity-building budgets. If you're eligible, it's worth asking for it in your plan.

Self-Managed

Self-managing your NDIS plan gives you the most flexibility and control. You pay providers directly and claim reimbursement from the NDIA. You can use any provider you choose, negotiate your own rates, and even employ your own support workers directly.

Self-management does come with more responsibility — you need to keep records and ensure you're spending within your plan goals — but many participants find it the most empowering option.

Which Option Is Right for You?

There's no single right answer. Some participants split their funding across multiple management types — for example, self-managing their core supports while having a plan manager handle therapy invoices.

A good Support Coordinator can help you think through the pros and cons based on your specific situation. They can also advocate for plan management funding at your planning meeting if that's the right fit.

Can You Change How Your Plan Is Managed?

Yes — you can request a change to your plan management type at your next plan review, or in some cases outside of a review by contacting the NDIA directly. If you're feeling constrained by agency-managed funding, it's worth raising this with your Support Coordinator.
